Canary Cookies and Tips for a Fun Holiday
Chef Daniel Orr loves to bake, and his recipe for Canary cookies will perfectly augment your holiday dinner table. He also has some general suggestions that can bring even more joy to your Christmas celebration.
Ingredients
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup cracked oats or regular oats
1/2 cup beef tallow, suet, or butter
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 whole eggs
1 cup dried blueberries
1 cup birdseed
Pulse all ingredients in a food processor just until combined. Remove to a cutting bowl and knead until mixture hangs together. Roll out on a piece of parchment paper to 1/3 inch thick. Cut out in any shape (Chef Orr likes gingerbread men because you can hang them up. Just poke holes in them before baking.) Place cookies on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Bake at 325 approximately 15 minutes or until hard and golden brown. Let cool completely and hang with ribbons.
Cook’s note: This is a fantastic way to use up old oats, flour, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, etc. Do not use anything salted or highly processed. Try to keep the cookies out of the rain and snow as much as possible. Place under overhangs or in “roofed” birdfeeders.
Prep Tips for a Fun Holiday
Look in your pantry and freezer and use items you’ve prepared during the summer bounty. Use up items that your hunter friends have provided as well.
Wintery chutneys, marmalade, compotes, salsa, and sauces are great on buffets and with leftovers.
Mulled wine and spiced cider are great warm-ups. Make them ahead and keep in milk jugs on the porch. It heats up in a minute in the microwave. Top with a little rum or bourbon for extra zip.
Plan some physical activities after meals. A walk up to the barn to see the pigs and chickens is a wonderful way to get folks off the couch. Winter photography hikes are a favorite.
Save beef drippings year-round and make holiday gifts for the birds. Cardinal Cup Cakes or Canary Cookies are wonderful gifts to nature.
